Why do you need air con services?

Air Con Filters

The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to regularly replace or clean the filters. Clogged and dirty filters reduce airflow and significantly reduce system efficiency. If airflow is obstructed, the air can bypass the filter and deposit debris directly on the evaporator coil, compromising the coil's heat absorption capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can reduce the energy consumption of your air conditioner by 5-15%.
In central air conditioning systems, the filters are usually located somewhere along the return duct. Common filter locations are walls, ceilings, or the air conditioner itself. Room air conditioners have a grill-mounted filter that faces into the room.
Some filter types are reusable; others need to be replaced. They are available in a variety of types and efficiencies. Clean or replace your air conditioner filter(s) every one to two months during the cooling season. Filters may require more frequent maintenance if the air conditioner is used constantly, is exposed to dusty conditions, or if you have furry pets in the home.

Air Con Coils

The evaporator coil and condenser coil of the air conditioner accumulate dirt and gunk over their months and years of operation. A clean filter prevents rapid contamination of the evaporator coil. However, over time, the evaporator coil will continue to accumulate dirt. This debris reduces airflow and insulates the coil, reducing its ability to absorb heat. To avoid this problem, check the evaporator coil every year and clean if necessary. The outdoor condenser coils can also get very dirty if the outdoor environment is dusty or there is foliage nearby. You can easily see the condenser coil and feel if dirt builds up on its fins.
You should minimize dirt and debris around the condensing unit. Your dryer vents, falling leaves, and the lawn mower are potential sources of dirt and debris. Clean the area around the coil, remove any debris and trim the foliage to at least 2 feet (0.6 meters) allow adequate airflow around the condenser.

Coil Fins

The aluminium fins on the evaporator and condenser coils bend easily and can block airflow through the coil. Air conditioner wholesalers sell a tool called a "fin comb" that combs these fins back to near-pristine condition.

Condensate Drains

Occasionally run a stiff wire through the unit's drain channels. Clogged drain channels prevent a unit from reducing humidity, and the resulting excess moisture can stain walls or carpets.

Window Seals for Room Air Cons

At the beginning of each cooling season, check the seal between the air conditioner and the window frame to ensure it is in contact with the metal casing of the unit. Moisture can damage this seal, allowing cold air to escape from your home.

Preparing for Winter

In winter, cover or remove and store your bedroom air conditioner. Covering the outdoor unit of a central air conditioner protects the unit from winter weather and dirt.

Hiring a Professional

If your air conditioner needs more than regular maintenance, e.g., if it does not lower the internal temperature to a comfortable level, call in a professional service technician. A well-trained technician will find and fix problems in your air conditioner.

The technician must:

• Check correct amount of refrigerant
• Refrigerant leak test with a leak detector
• Captures any refrigerant that needs to be evacuated from the system instead of illegally venting it to the atmosphere
• Check and patch leaks in central system ducts
• Measure the airflow through the evaporator coil
• Check the correct electric control sequence and make sure that the heating system and the cooling system cannot work at the same time
• Check electrical connections, clean and tighten connections and apply non-conductive coating if necessary
• Check oil motors and belts for tightness and wear
• Check the accuracy of the thermostat.
